Damp Wind and Leaves by Amy Grech is a charming Halloween short story, perfect for the season! (It can be downloaded here.) It intertwines a young man's love of Halloween and horror with his budding love of a Halloween partygoer. A great read for young and old during the Halloween season-- deftly handled, and very entertaining. It reminds me of classic Ray Bradbury, without being imitative.
The story comes a recent collection of horror stories (most definitely not sweet or meant for children) titled Apple of My Eye. A review of it can be found at this page of Zombos' Closet of Horror. Besides Damp Wind and Leaves, I also enjoyed the stories Prevention, Rampart, and EV 2000. All had creepy and amusing elements, (reminding me of the best in horror pulp fiction) and EV 2000 was over the top enough to make me want to see it filmed soon.
But Damp Wind and Leaves (which will appeal especially to people who grew up in the '60s and '70s and who remember what small town Halloweens were like then), you should read today! This minute, if possible! Worth much more than the cheap price Amazon is asking for a download of it. So check it out, scout!
Apple of My Eye is available from Amazon.com.
Thanks for the kudos, Max!
