31 Days of Halloween: Halloween magazine #1

Below is the one of the earliest Halloween issues of a magazines I can remember owning. With plenty of Halloween graphics and several simple-but-colorful Halloween crafts inside, I treasured it very much.

A clown dragging a dead witch out of a box -- COOL! And a severed pirate's head, too! WOW!

I was fascinated by craft projects (my paternal grandmother used to like to make stuff found in Pack-O-Fun magazine), and this was at a time when cheap trinkets and holiday decor from Japan looked homemade. I believe someone in my family made the "gorilla" mask above. But no kid I knew was likely to trick-or-treat in a homemade mask when Ben Cooper and Collegeville had slick, garish masks and costumes to dress up in.

I remember making these apple jack-o-lanterns, but hoping I didn't get any in my treat bag. Yeah, miniature marshmallows were great, but they belonged in hot chocolate or in cereal! Apples were okay to eat at other times, but only caramel apples were acceptable as Halloween treats!

More from this issue on Sunday!
